Hi, my name is Henrietta and I live in Oakland, CA. I have one year experience as a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I love taking care of sick people in the hospital when I was a student and as a mom of four kids, I love taking care of people and I would like to share my experience with others who needed my help.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, as a new caregiver you are going to go to people's home which you don't know them and they don't know you. You have to have open minded and patient, so that you'll be able to deal with people. Take your time to learn what your client likes and what they dislike. Take your time to learn more than once what they don't want. It will be more easier as you go on but the key is patience.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
My client that I will never forget is Mrs. Andrew. She was suffering from dementia. She was always remembering the name of her kids. In the morning after I step in when I greet her, the first thing I used to ask her was the name of my kids. I loved the way she used to name my four kids without forgetting any of them, even if she had dementia. I love it and I cherish her. I'm really sorry that she passed but she made me feel so happy, whenever I was with her, she told me a lot of stories.
