Hi! My name is Hermeika, and I live in the city of Oakland, CA. I have two years experience in caregiving.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of someone very close to me, a relative, my mother. She came in contact with cancer, breast cancer, and had to go through chemotherapy and medication afterwards, and also just for her recovery and everything, so we went through that for almost about two years, and me just helping her with her daily issues every day, and her taking other medication, helping her with her other medication, and taking that on time.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be very patient, to be very patient, and to try to meet all the expectations of the family, as well as the patient, him or herself. To be kind. To be open. And to be just very caring and nurturing.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I would never forget would be my mother, by the name of Joy. There was a moment where, after she had started taking chemotherapy, and started breaking her out on her breast area, and I remember as it was starting to go away, it had gotten to the shape of a letter, and I remember her making the joke saying that it was going to be her first tattoo, and too bad it was going to be from a breakout. And it was just kind of funny, and we just kind of laughed about it.
