Hi, my name is Imani Newton, I live in Stockton, California, and I have 10 years of experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I was taking care of a loved one who was diagnosed with breast cancer, and they sent her home to pass on. She was on hospice. I believe that everybody should be able to have dignity even though they are sick, so that is why I became a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to always patience, and compassion, and understanding. Always be able to step outside of yourself, and kind of sympathize, and empathize, with the situation that the person that you're caring for is going through. So, my advice to new caregivers would be to always be compassionate and emphasize with the person that they're taking care of, and be considerate, and try to make sure that that person feels comfortable, and still provide the care that they need.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is a young lady that I was taking care of. She was on hospice, and I was her hospice care provider, and she was very young. I will never forget the time when she was getting close to her death, and she just wanted like the simple things. She was in her twenties, and it was very sad, and it was a very sad time for this family. I remember coming over to take care of her, and she wanted her nails painted, and she asked me the last time before I came, and nobody had any colors that looked appropriate for her age. I remember just going to the store before I came and coming painting her nails, and the smile that was on her face, and how she enjoyed that, and how, for one little moment, she got to kind of be her age, and kind of, you know, girl talk, and remember her life, and flashback on her good years. So, that is a moment that I would never forget.
