Hi, my name is Ingrid. I live in Antioch, CA and I have over 4 years experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of a loved one. About 4 years ago, my grandmother had a stroke and I was the one taking care of her up until we put her into a home. Unfortunately, she passed away about 2 years ago, but I was the family member that was originally taking care of her.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
Pay attention, have eyes and ears open. Usually the elderly at that age know what they want and what they don't want. So, my advice would be to listen and pay close attention.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
I will never forget Dorothy. She had really bad Alzheimer's and dementia. Having a conversation with her was really difficult. Literally after 5 or 10 minutes she would ask you the same question she asked you 5 - 10 minutes ago. Luckily I have patience, so sitting down and talking to her wasn't the issue - she loved sitting and talking and watching T.V. Dorothy was my most memorable client; I'll probably never forget her.
