Hi my name is Irma Sophia. I go by Sophie. I am currently living in National City, CA. That is in San Diego County. I have over eight years of experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because once my grandparents fell ill, I cared for them. When they passed, I cared for my parents. Then, when I got married, I cared for my in-laws. I knew then that I wanted to be a professional caregiver and to provide best quality care possible.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice would be, to a new caregiver, is always be patient. Always remember that one day, you will be in the same position. How would you like to be cared for? Always look after the people you care for as if you love yourself. Because if you don't love yourself, how can you provide the best quality of care to others?
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will always remember is Miss Pauline. Miss Pauline suffered with early signs of dementia. As I began to care for her, I started noticing that even though her dementia progressed, there were little things that she always held on to and because of that, I tried to continue that care for her. For example, she could never remember my name. So every day, I always played a fun name game with her, until eventually, she did catch on my name. She always called me Sofia the First, like the Disney character. We did whatever we could to try to help with the little things, even if it's a name.
