Hi, my name is Jackie. I live in Campbell, CA and I've been a caregiver for 20 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because when I was 16 my mum passed away and I had been caring for her. Then my grandmother got admitted to a nursing home and got Alzheimer's. I used to visit her and watched how the nurses cared for her. I loved what they were doing and became very interested in it. I have been doing this job for over 20 years and I truly love it. There's nothing else I would ever want to do.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to listen a lot and take advice from the people around you that you work with, even families you are involved with. Don't feel rushed to do anything. Always be sure to check in with your manager, supervisor or with the family. If something goes wrong, just let them know straight away. Things happen and it's not your fault. Always be open to learning new thing and just be friendly and happy to go to work everyday. These families want someone upbeat and positive that's going to look after their family member and make them feel good.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a gentleman I was looking after in his own home. He was 94 years old and was suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's. He was a wonderful person and his personality was still there inside. He would joke and laugh with me and make comments and critique me. I just loved his sense of humor. He just knew so much and I learned so much from him. I don't have anything significant that really happened because everyday was different, everyday was a challenge, and everyday was thoroughly enjoyable.I grew to love him and I treated him like I would a family member.
