Hi, my name is Jalisa. I live in Reseda, CA and I have 10 years of caregiving experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I had a younger brother under me. And he's autistic. And I was always responsible for caring for him. Also, seeing my mother care for my grandparents, and her aunts, and uncles as they got older gave me that need and satisfaction in helping people. So caregiving just became one of my natures in life.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to definitely take your time. Get to know your client. Don't make them feel like you're there for a job. Just make them feel that you're there just because you care because actually, that should be why you're there. And then another thing will be just to get to know their likes and dislikes. Just give yourself room to grow. And also, just don't be offended if they don't warm up to you right away. Because it takes people time.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Gladys. She was one of the most loving people that I had the honor of taking care of. I remembered just meeting her and she was very shy and timid at first. Just coming and talking to her and everything, at first, I thought she was mute and didn't know how to talk. But after talking to her as I was working with her and doing her care and whatever, she actually started talking. And when she started talking, she turned out to be one of the most fantastic people I knew and had taught me so many things. So I would definitely say that just taking your time and getting to know your clients is one of the best things because you'll never know what treasures they're sitting upon.
