Hi, my name is James. I live in Santa Barbara, CA and I've been a caregiver for 3 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my grandma, she needed help and assistance, and so did my aunt. It really started off just loving old people, caring for them and where their needs are. I've always loved taking care of old people. I'm always there. I'm always willing to help. And I started when I was 17 years old, and it just went on from there. It kept going, and I really enjoy it. I enjoy it a lot, actually, because you always have to respect the elders as a young man. It's just something I like to do.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, be respectful, be on time, be helpful, know your limitations, do everything that the recipient needs. Anything he or she asks for, make sure you're on top of it. And again, mainly just be respectful. Respect the elders.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client I will never forget was funny even though our eras were different. I'm more now generation, she was back then. We had a lot in common, though. She was really sweet. She liked me, I liked her. Everything went well. She was just a good person all around, and I really enjoyed being her caregiver.
