Hi. My name is Jamika Ingram. I live in Houston, TX, and I have 10 years of experience as a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my great-great uncle was suffering with dementia and prostate cancer.
And my mom couldn't take care of him, so I took upon taking care of him.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be you have to be patient. You have to be courteous. You have to take ample amount of time because you're dealing with a person, not anything else. So you would have to definitely be patient and understanding. You have to smile. You have to talk, interact with this person for them to get to be close to you, and get the feel so that they can make a bond, and have trust with you.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget, his name is Bill. I met him when I first started working for him. He was 90 and his favorite quote is "Camelot". And he had dementia, even though I had to reintroduce myself to him some days because he didn't remember. But he used to sit at the table, after I fixed him breakfast, and hear recite Camelot to me. And his wife, she used to like, she used to be so upset, but it was cute, and it was lovable. And I looked forward to going to work every morning just to hear him recite Camelot and be around him.
