Hello, my name is Janae. I live in Garden Grove, CA and I have seven years of experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver to care for my great-grandmother who is 92 now. She lives in North Carolina as of recently but I have enjoyed taking care of her. Also, one of my little sisters has Asperger's and she lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. So I spend months and months out there taking care of her, getting her ready for school, making sure she bathes, brushes her teeth, her hair and all of that. I take care of her and I really enjoy it. I love taking care of people and making them feel that they have someone in life.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice for a new caregiver would be to understand that each individual is different. Their needs are different. However, the attention and the companionship is a necessity in these kinds of situations. So I would say, be patient and tolerant and actually really have a passion for this line of work.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I would never forget is a man. He was in his early 70s, I believe and he had an issue with taking his medicine, his hygiene, working out, like exercising, just healthy things. So I took him to a pool and we did kind of like water aerobics which he really enjoyed and he started getting healthier. He started walking and being able to get up out of the chair more. It was just really a memorable time, I was very proud of him and his whole attitude changed. It was very beautiful.
