Hi! My name is Jane, and I live in San Jose, CA; and I have eight years caregiving experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my mother came down with Parkinson's disease back in the 1980s and I took care of her for about five years. And my father was also ill, had a brain tumor, and I took care of him for about four years, so I have lots of experience, and I love working with the elderly. I'm a very patient person, compassionate, and a good companion. So that's the end of my story as far as that's concerned.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to any caregiver, is to be a very patient person with elderly people. As I said, be good about being with the person as a companion, and be a very personable person. Medication reminders are very important. Being a good companion and a good caregiver is very important in this industry.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget, his name is Sal, and I worked with him. He had Parkinson's disease, and I was his companion, I was his caregiver, I prepared meals for him, did his laundry, his chores, his bathrooms, gave him a shower, groomed him. I was a compassionate caregiver to him and I worked with him from Friday evening to Monday morning, and I worked with him for about a year and a half. It was private duty. So anyway, that's my story on Mr. Sal.
