Hi, my name is Janee. I live in Los Angeles, CA, and I have been a caregiver for two years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I wanted to have a job where I felt like I was giving back to my community. In doing so, caregiving has allowed me to care for those individuals who have helped uplift our community. They gave back to our community when they were younger, so this job was perfect for me. I also really love being around elderly people and people with physical or mental disabilities because I feel like I can provide a positive influence in their lives and they can provide a positive influence in mine.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to have patience. Not only patience with the person you are serving but have patience with yourself. Caregiving isn't an easy job at all. You have to mesh with your client's personality and also their personality has to mesh with yours, so just be patient. Allow yourself to say calm and everything should be fine. Just patience is the key.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Alex. Alex is the client I've been with for the longest. He is a very, very, very bright man. He's non-verbal, but we've developed our own form of communication. He has his good days, he has his bad days, but any day with him is great to me. He is a kind and gentle man and working with him has definitely taught me how important being patient with a client is.
