Hi, my name is Janette. I live in Austin, Texas, and I have two years' experience as a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my grandparents needed some help, and I assisted with their cleaning, and cooking, and taking care of them. And it just inspired me in knowing that as I will age and get older. I also will need or want someone to come and care for me as well, and I administered companionship and activities, and I think I was a difference in their lives in keeping their little spirits alive and going.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be always have patience, and a smile on your face, and complete understanding. As we get older, we don't have all knowledge of everything around us, and they want to feel safe. And knowing that you come in with a smile on your face and an understanding attitude, it makes all the difference in the world.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget was Ms. Annie. She was still very lively and active, and she loved taking her swimming lesson. And we would go down to the Catholic convent where she took her swimming lesson. And that was her highlight of the day, and I think it just was so inspirational to me to be able to a part of something that she enjoyed so much. And she liked taking little walks around the neighborhood, and we would go for walks, and it was just a good experience and heartwarming to be able to do something that she enjoyed so much. It just made her day, and I was just glad to be a part of that.
