Hi! My name is Jasmine. I live in Arlington, TX, and I have been a caregiver for 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because, for one, my grandmother has been in the field of caregiving all her life and it rubbed off on me. I love caring for people. I love helping people. In spite of their difficulties, they need to be loved. And some people are just left. And so that's what inspires me because, I could be in that position, and I don't want to be. I would want someone to care for me as well. And this is what I love doing.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, make sure this is something you want to do. Make sure this is something you're dedicated to doing. Over the years of being a caregiver, I've dedicated my everything to helping another person. Making sure they're smiling, making sure they're clean. This is another person's life that you have in your hands, so make sure you're a person who can treat them the way you would like to be treated.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Eli. He's 16 years old. He's unable to walk, talk, anything. He's bedridden. And he's from Congo, so being in America, it was really different for him. When I care for him, oh my, it was just-- I love him to death. And to this day, I think of him, I want to see him. If I could go back to him, I will go back and be his caregiver. I mean, he's young, and his family doesn't know much about American habits and cleanliness. So, me taking care of him changed his life a lot. And I know that I changed his life a lot because he changed my life a lot.
