Hi, my name is Jean. I live in Rio Vista, CA and I have been a caregiver for 2 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my sister-in-law, who inspired me. I even met one of her clients, and it reminded me of my grandmother when I was still living in the Phillipines, and I was taking care of her.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is to be patient. I used to take care of clients with dementia, who keeps on repeating and asking the same questions, and patience is the key. And try not to get it to you because you will keep on hearing the same questions, and the only way to do it is to answer and just be patient.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client I will never forget-- his name's Tony. He is legally blind, and he's very sharp, even though he is legally blind. He made me feel like I am his hero. Some of things that are so easy for me to do, and he will ask me to do it. And for him it's just such a big deal, so I will never forget him.
