Hi, my name is Je'Licia. I live in Buena Park, CA and I've been a caregiver for 7 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my mother. She used to work for a facility of adults with special needs and she would come home, tell me all about her day and I was very interested, I have the personality I was like, "Well, let me give it a try." and I love what I did. I love it.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be patience. Definitely the number one is to always, always, always be patient with the person that you're caring for.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is John. He's young, he's 32, he'll be 33 this year. He came from a developmental facility and then he got transferred to a home with four other clients - roomates. And he has self-injuring behavior and ever since he came to this home that I work at he changed completely. He did a 360. He still has a little self-injuries where he hit himself, but it's minimum now and he laughs at everything. He seems a lot happier. When you walk in a room with him, it's just-- the atmosphere-- everything is different. It's so crazy how he can change your whole mood.
