Hi, my name is Jennifer. I live in West Covina, CA and I have been a CNA and an in-home caregiver for eight years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I enjoy taking care of people, especially the elderly. I love to listen to their stories and make sure that they have their needs met and they're well taken care of.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to listen to your patient, and always watch. If they're angry, then maybe they're in pain. Always watch for signs. Pay very close attention to them. And take the time, be patient, and listen.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Kaye. It was my first week working in this nursing home and none of the nurses wanted to take care of her. They said she was very difficult and very mean. And I ended up having her in my first week, and I walked in, and I looked at her, and she looked at me, and she couldn't talk because she had a tracheotomy. So she wrote things down and she mouthed them with her lips. I happened to be very good at reading lips and I read her lips. And she said, "You can understand me?" and I said, "Yes, I can understand you." And then we bonded. I ended up taking her home and I took care of her and I had a staff. We just had great years together. I'll always miss her.
