Hi, my name is Jessica. I live in Brady, TX and I've been a caregiver for about five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I actually became a caregiver really because of my late husband. He was really a bad diabetic, he had type 2 diabetes, and I saw the effects that had on him, on his body and I loved him. I enjoyed taking care of him and I just enjoy helping people and taking care of them and their needs.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver that has never had to take care of somebody that is sick, is that you have to be very patient and understanding. I think overall patience is one of the biggest things and understanding that that person actually needs you. They're depending on you to be there for them and you have to have it in your heart to be a caregiver, I believe. And patience, understanding, and loving, and caring, and a great listener is just what they need.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is my one and only client, my late husband. I don't really know if you can necessarily call him a client, I cared for him until the day that he passed away which was last November. When I think about him, he was loving and caring and he needed me and I did not mind being there for him as much as I did, but he is the only client that I have ever had. So once again, I can't really say he was a client. I have experience in doing that because he was so severely ill and I did take care of him the way that I did.
