Hi, my name is Jessica. I live in Salinas, CA and I have been doing caregiving for 7 plus years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I started taking care of my grandmother first and then I met other people that lived in the neighborhood she lived in and I helped care for a few of the neighbors also and I enjoyed it. So I just continued doing it for quite some time and now I'm in school for nursing, so I'm doing caregiving again.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to have patience and just take care of your client well, listen to them, talk to them, be friendly, sometimes they're lonely and they need somebody to talk to. So that would be my advice to new caregivers.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is someone from an adult facility. She was a very nice lady. She liked to sing to all of us. She'd sing "You are my sunshine," which I thought was very cute. She was suffering from dementia so she didn't remember us every day, but it was still great to talk to her, she was just very happy, very friendly, very caring and she would always give us advice, so I would say that she was somebody that I would probably never forget and I do plan to go visit her often.
