Can you tell us a little about yourself and your experience as a caregiver?
Hi, my name is Jessica. I live in San Francisco, CA, and I've been a caregiver for over 20 years.
Who is your favorite client?
My favorite client is Miss Nancy. I would take her to dialysis three times a week. She is blind and has no muscle, so she can't walk or stand. I have to feed her, I have to change her, and it brings me joy to go work for Miss Nancy. I would get up in the morning excited about going to work just to go see Miss Nancy. I even stop by her house when I'm not scheduled to be there, just to go see Miss Nancy.
What do you enjoy most about being a caregiver?
Just the fact that I can help someone do something that they cannot do for themselves. It's just a great feeling to be able to help somebody.
How did you get into caregiving?
Being raised in a board and care home, I became a caregiver because I just love caring for people. I've been doing it for so long, I didn't even know it was a job until I got older. When I was a kid, it was just what we did. Believe it or not, I had about 13 clients when I was just 6 years old. Caregiving is a lifestyle for me.
