Hi, my name is Jessica. I live in West Sacramento, CA and I've been a caregiver for two years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my grandmother was sick years ago and I helped take care of her. And now, my mom has breathing problems and side effects. I helped take care of her as well.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient with the people who you are caring for. Remember that they would like to do the things that you're doing for them. They would like to leave them on their own. They just can't. And so you need to be very patient and understanding with them. And just basically, love on them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is my mother. I will never forget her because when she was in a hospital, she was having breathing problems and she couldn't use the bathroom on her own. And I basically had to wipe her after she went poop. And we both ended up laughing so hard because it was so funny, I'd never wiped her before. And it was just so funny because it was her daughter wiping her after she went to the bathroom. We just laughed, and laughed, and laughed, and laughed. Then when we got home, and she was in the shower, and I was washing her up in the shower, she was still laughing, and I was still laughing as well. So it was actually pretty funny.
