Hi, my name is Joshanay. I live in Vallejo, CA and I've been a caregiver for 4 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my great grandmother was sick and she was placed into a convalescent home and the staff there were horrible. She ended up getting bed sores and sheets wasn't changed. No bathing, no grooming, and it just inspired me to be the voice of the elders who does have dementia, or who can't defend for their self, or who doesn't know what's going on. And that inspired me to want to get in the healthcare business because I enjoy working with old people. I enjoy it so much.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to never be on your phone, always look out for the safety of your client, always know what's going on with your client. For example, if they took their medicine, if they're eating right, if they're having behavioral problems. Taking notes is very, very, very important, and always remember that you are always responsible for your client no matter what. So your client's safety is the most important thing and also your safety too.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget would be Miss Helen. Miss Helen was an older woman. She was in high fall risk client. She was a very, very, very sweetheart. We laughed, we watched the news, we clipped newspaper articles, we would bake together. She was by far the most memorable client that I had. I really enjoyed being with her. We did things such as painting, we went out to stores, she likes to go outdoors sometimes. We took power naps together during my break time. She was really awesome, a true sweetheart.
