Hi, my name is Joana. I live in Long Beach, CA and I've been a caregiver for 1 year.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver to a loved one, which was my great-grandfather, and he also had Alzheimer's, and also I cared for him when he was under hospice.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, be compassionate about the elderly people because we will all soon get there and compassion is the number one key. Caring for them like you would want someone to care for you.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is my great-grandfather. We always went for walks, and we always did outside activities together regardless of how he was, whether in a wheelchair, in the cane. We would always talk to each other. We would always laugh together. We would always have his grandkids together, which was the most precious thing my kids will never forget. Also for me and him, we shared a lot of moments together where we just laughing, remember memories from his times, and talk about his time back in the day with my great-grandmother. The conversations mainly made him very, very happy.
