Hi, my name is Jocelyne. I live in Columbia, MD and I have five years of experience as a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my mom back home where I came from. She was a little sick back then and more so when we came over here to the United States. She was not feeling too well so we needed somebody to be there for her to take care of her. So I was the one who helped her, took care of the household chores, and did her groceries, bathing, toileting, everything. All her errands, I was the one who did it for her.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be patient with the client, always listen, communicate with them, pay attention to what they are saying, focus on what they need. They need to have somebody to listen and communicate with them, make them happy. Talking to them is the best advice I would give to a new caregiver. Pay attention, make sure they have everything that they need.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Luis-ana. She was really nice, caring, loving. She could understand. She could communicate. She was very, very good. She would make you laugh. You know, clients, some of them make you laugh. She was like my grandmother.
