Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into caregiving?
My name is Jose and I live in Mountain View, California. I’ve been working as caregiver and licensed nurse practitioner for 14 years in the United States, and in my country I worked for 15 years. I became a caregiver when I came to the United States. I saw in the newspaper there were several positions open. Then, my sister who is an MD encouraged me to study nursing, which I did.
What piece of advice would you give to a new caregiver?
First of all, every client has different behaviors and different diseases. It all depends on what is going on with the family. You have to assess yourself, the family, the client, and what the client needs. Then you slowly begin to gain trust. This is very important. My second piece of advice is that you must speak very clearly and state the reason why you are in their home.
