My name is Joshua. I live in Inglewood, California. I've been a caregiver for 23 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver 23 years ago after my younger brother was hit by a truck and paralyzed his whole body from the neck to the feet. So we were told that he needs 95% care, so I decided to accept that I would take care of him. He is now still alive, but paralyzed on one side of his body. He's on a wheelchair. He can move around on his own and he's taking care of himself 95% and 5% for me to help him out.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is to have love, patient, helpful, kind, willing to help anytime, regardless of the situation.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will always remember is Quallan. He was in a coma for almost nine months, but I called him on a daily basis just to say hi or call his name just to ask him to answer me, but he answered me after six months. And that is the moment I will never forget when he answered the phone and say hi back when I keep calling his name.
