Hi, my name is Jovelyn. I live in Torrence, CA and I have been a caregiver for 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I like this job. When I am working, I am happy. And I feel [inaudible] when I see that people or the person that I am taking care of, is happy, comfortable, and [inaudible]. For 10 years I am happy with my job.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to other caregiver would be, be patient, be understanding. You need to remember that you are taking care of the people who are not really in good health or they're no longer young, they're not strong. Sometimes they are ill. So if sometimes we get hurt or sometimes we feel like being misunderstood, do not take it personally. You should always remember that if sometimes, for example, these people say something that hurt our feelings, we should always remember that is not them who are talking to us but their illness.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client I will never forget was Marlyn. That lady was very funny. We always had a good time, always had fun time. The thing that I always remember about her is when I ask her to stand up. When I ask her to just stand up, she just laughed, just kept laughing. But there was one time I showed her what to do, and she was like, "Oh, you mean stand up for Jesus." I said, "Yeah, stand up for Jesus." And then she stood up. That time, every time I ask her to stand up, I should say, "Stand up for Jesus." And she laughed and she would stand up. And then that lady was very fun because every day whenever I do my hair, I'll do hers too. If I do my nails, I'll do hers too. It was fun.
