Hi, my name is Juanita. I live in Zapata, TX and I've been a caregiver for five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I had to help out my family when my loved one got sick. I did that for some time and then that's when I realized that I enjoyed helping others that couldn't take care of themselves anymore.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be probably to have a lot of patience. Many times the people that we're taking care of are used to always having control of their lives, of them doing everything by themselves and yet many times it's hard for them to accept that they need help. So, it's definitely very important to have a lot of patience with them, for them to help them understand that we're there to help them not to fight them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a client that I had about two years ago. She was very sweet lady. In the beginning, she was very aggressive towards all her caregivers because she used to strongly believe that she was still able to do everything, and even though we were trying very hard. Eventually, she opened up to myself, and another caregiver that we would work together. She opened up and she became a mother figure to both of us. She was just the nicest lady. Unfortunately, she passed away a few years back, but she was always very great with us.
