Hi my name is Judy. I've been a caregiver for three years and I live in Corona, CA.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I have always had compassion for the elderly. I have always been in the service and ministry regarding the elderly and I had applied for an administrative position and they interviewed me to become a caregiver. I just really love the elderly, and it's a very heart fulfilling and rewarding job, to give them purpose and to love them and be that family substitute that they need.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to always remain calm, regardless of the circumstances or the issues that you're dealing with. I find that keeping your peace and keeping your cool, no matter what, not only helps the situation but it will help you not to be overwhelmed with what needs to be done.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I would never forget is Walter. I was his 24-hour caregiver, Monday through Friday and he was the closest thing to a father that I've ever had and I told him that I was a son. I was the son that he never had. We did projects together, and I just love him tremendously. I grew a seed from his mandarin tree, which he used to eat every day, and I still have it and I don't ever leave it behind, wherever I relocate and it's now about four feet tall, and it reminds me of him every day and I miss him.
