Hi, my name is June. I live in Savannah, GA and I've been a caregiver for six years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my parents needed someone to help them out several years ago, and I was so happy to do that. I love the elderly people and helping them makes me feel good.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be kind and always be there for them. Whatever they need. Whatever that is. And really listen to them. Listen to their stories. Some of them that have Alzheimer's talk about things that were past. Be kind and listen intently to what they have to say. Some of them have some good stories to tell.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I would never forget is a lady who had dementia. The beginning stages of Alzheimer's. She could carry on a conversation, but she could only remember the past. She couldn't really remember what happened yesterday. And she repeated herself constantly. Every five minutes she would repeat the same thing. Same thing over and over again. So she really just stuck in my mind. I was with her for almost three years. And I really got to know her, and how to handle her and her needs.
