Hi, my name is Kamidra. I live in Garland, TX and I have been a caregiver for eight years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I found out seven years ago that my mom was diagnosed with cervical cancer and she needed a full-time caregiver. I love helping people. I'm going to school to be an RN, so I just love the fact of helping everyone.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, patience is a virtue. Listening to your patient is very important. A lot of times patients can't communicate verbally so they use body language. Learning body language and just knowing your patient. Sometimes they just need you to listen to them. So that would be my advice.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Randy. Randy was brought into the hospital because he was suffering from dementia. Actually, the family had just found out that he was diagnosed with dementia. When I came into his hall, he was looking for his wife. His wife had actually passed away about five years ago. But he forgot, and all the nurses and the staff on the floor would just say when he said he was looking for his wife, they would just say, "Randy, your wife is dead".
