Hi, my name is Karen. I live in Central Square, NY and I have four years of experience as a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I really enjoy talking and helping other people. I worked at home for several years while my children were growing up and then I decided that I'd like to get out of the house a little bit. And I decided to try caregiving and I'm glad I did because I love it.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to have patience and kindness to people because they're not always feeling well and a lot of times all they're looking for is companionship and a little help.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Pete. Pete had young-onset Alzheimer's disease but he was in great shape. We would go for walks, and we'd go six miles, and we'd get back to the house, and then he wouldn't remember. He wouldn't remember that we went anywhere, so he would always be like, "Come on. Let's go." Or we would eat, we'd have lunch, and we'd finish, and then he wouldn't remember that he ate. So, he would always be like, "Come on. Let's eat." But he was very kind and loving person and I'll never forget him.
