Hi my name is Karen. I live in the city of Hawthorne,CA. I have 10 years of experience as a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of a family member and also have continued to be a caregiver throughout the years. Because I feel that it is my calling to be compassionate and to help others. So I take reward in doing what I do, for caring for other people.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to have as much communication as possible, to ask as many questions as you feel comfortable with, in order to be able to know and be comfortable with all of the needs that need to be met for that patient. It is important that you ask as many questions-- it doesn't matter if you feel that you're asking too many questions. It's better to ask questions and be sure of what you're doing, to make sure that they are comfortable and that you are providing the best care that you can for them. They need to feel comfortable with you, as much as you with them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client that I will always remember is Jo. She was a client that I had for a few years and I just remember being so appreciative of the way that she was responding to me as her caregiver. She was very lonely, but we did form a great bond and we were able to form a friendship, not only as me, her caregiver, but as a friend.
