Hello, my name is Katiana Francis. I reside in Richmond, California, and I have four years of experience with in-home care.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I just love helping people. I've done it since I was about 15. I helped my grandmother, I helped my mother. I did house chores. My grandmother had surgery, so they had to amputate her leg. And I just picked up the pieces for her and made sure she took her medicine, helped her in, out the bed, her wheelchair. We used a lift to help her into the wheelchair. And I washed her down. She was scared of the tub, so I just wiped her down in the bed. I quite enjoy it. It's my dream job. I just love helping people.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to the new caregiver would be to treat them as human beings. Talk, be open, watch over them, make them feel safe in their own home. Pretty much like a best friend - that shoulder they want to lean on, let them know you're there for them for anything they need. Build up that trust with them. And just love what you do. Put your all in it. You have to build a relationship with your client and be fun. It's really fun. I love it, and I believe you'll love it too.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget would be Janice Allen. She's like a mother figure to me. I don't have my mother in my life, and when I was down I could talk to here. That's how our bond is. We vent to one another, ask each other for advice here and there. Janice has been my best patient so far.
