Hi, my name is Katomia. I live in Minden, LA and I've been a caregiver for eight years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my grandmother who, at the time, was sick, and the company that they had for her didn't have anybody in her city to give care for her. So, I volunteered, and I ended up liking it. And I became my auntie's caregiver and a cousin of mine who passed.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to have patience and understand that people go through things in life and have life changes, and sometimes they're not able to do the things that they're used to doing, so they have to be assisted with their needs.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Miss Patricia. She had the most loving spirit ever. All she wanted you to do was come there, cook her some breakfast, and watch TV with her. She laughed. She gave me a resurrection flower and I didn't understand what it was. She's always positive. No matter what's going on, no matter how bad her day is. She still looks for good things to happen. She's always happy.
