Hi, my name is Kay. I live in Ventura, CA and I have three years of caregiver and hospital experiences.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I wanted to make a difference. My brother and my mom were both caregivers. I remember being young and my brother was a live-in caregiver, and I would go visit him and I've had a wonderful experience. I love how much you can give back to the community while caring for the elderly. I'm also currently on the wait list for the nursing program, and I also believe it'd be great experience, as well.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is that you definitely should be nurturing, compassionate, and have that empathy, and be able to put yourself in their position and their condition. And just do everything you can to put a smile on their faces.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
All my clients are special to me in their own individual way, but one in particular, I will never forget. We had a great connection. She had a really hard time communicating. She would say orange but meant apple so it'd be difficult at times, but I almost every time knew exactly what she meant. And she would always try to get me to laugh. For example, so many times she would stick out her dentures or pull out her dentures and stick out her tongue, just to get me to laugh. It was just wonderful. I definitely knew what she wanted before she wanted it. I would massage her feet with lotion, and she would just hold my hand as a thank you. It just put a smile on my face. Being able to help her and how happy she made me feel. She was definitely a special lady, and I will truly miss her.
