Hi, my name is Kayla. I've been caregiving for a year and I live in Hemet, CA.
How did you get into caregiving?
I originally became a caregiver because I like to take care of people. I originally started my caregiving journey taking care of my mother in-law. So, I want to branch out and take care of other people's family members, not just my own.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be don't set your expectations too high. Don't put too much pressure on yourself. Yes, your job is to take care of somebody but don't look at is as if you screw up, this is going to happen, which, you're dealing with a person's life, but you've got to understand that they're human, you're human, you make mistakes. I'm sure if you get with a person that's understandable and reasonable with knowing what you can and cannot do upfront, then you should have no problem.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I'll never forget is Jerry. He has to be one of my favorites because he hurt his arm, I think from a stroke. And his arm was permanently bent, and he told me numerous times, there was countless times he'd sit on it, and my job as a caregiver was to make him as comfortable as possible. So, I avoided that arm at all costs and he laughed about it a couple of times. And he just had a good sense of humor about it. He could have been down in the dumps about it, but he had a good sense of humor about it.
