Hi, my name is KeAnna. I live in Fort Worth, TX and I've been a caregiver for two years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my grandmother was diagnosed with dementia, and I was all she had at home to care for her. And considering the fact that I've always liked helping people, especially the elderly, it is something that I wanted to stay in the medical field with.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, enrich the lives of those you serve with compassion, respect, excellence and integrity. And that I believe that if you're going to do a caregiving job, you must have a good attitude and treat those that you're helping as if they're your loved ones. Don't treat them any differently.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Mister Joe. He was such a sweetheart. He had Alzheimer's, so there were things he didn't remember, and he had gotten very sick, so I had to sit and give him breathing treatments. But he was so kind. I ran into him at the doctor and he told me, "Hey, I remember you. You live where I live." And everyone in the doctor's office just laughed and said, "You must be doing your job really good." And when he passed away it took a toll on me but I know that's a part of my job.
