Hi, my name is Kelly. I live in Bellflower, CA and I have been a caregiver now for ten years plus.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I found that helping others is what I enjoy doing. I was initially certified as a medical assistant and it just wasn't as fulfilling as caring for people individually. My father-in-law got sick and for the remaining six years of his life, I took care of him and I have just been a caregiver ever since.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to always love what you're doing. Wake up every morning loving what you are doing. Always remember that the person you are caring for, once had a life before - a life of independence. Never try to take that from them, yet, try to understand the big changes in their life.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I never will forget. I never forget any of my clients. I have carried a piece of each and every one of them with me and I have seen them out through their remaining days. Every client I have been with, I have stayed with till they no longer need me or till the end of their days. I guess if I had to choose one, it would be my father-in-law. He was a great man who lived a great life.
