Hi, my name is Kendra, and I live in Macon, GA, and I have been a caregiver for 11 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver, because at the age of 15 when my cousin passed away from an asthma attack, I just wanted to know what I could have done to save his life. Even though my aunt was in a home, and she knew CPR, it was too late for her to get to him before he had the attack. So I just said in my mind, in my heart that I wanted to care for people. I wanted to save lives. I wanted to be there.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be don't do it for the money. Do it from your heart, because dealing with seniors and people with disability, you have to have a heart for this. You have to have a passion for taking care of others, and it's not cut out for everyone. So, just have it in your heart, be passionate about it.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is Grandpa Wally. Grandpa Wally was born in Jamaica. He was 104 years old, and I got to witness that, but you would think, "Oh, he's 104. Oh well, they don't know what they're doing. They don't know who people are." That wasn't the case. His mind was right. He was at that age where his mind was right, and he used to play checkers all the time. And even though he was 104, he used to beat me every single time.
