Hi, my name is Kendra. I live in Quincy, FL. And I've been a caregiver for nine years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I enjoy caring for someone who needs it. I enjoy being needed. I feel accomplished. I find a personal strength in increasing confidence in others. I loved giving that to their families. I have a great character. I love developing new skills. I have learned to value people.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to understand that it will be a struggle at first; transitioning to a new caregiver. The relatives really need your help, so it is very important that you are trustworthy, dependable, understanding, loving, caring, and most of all, understand that this is more than just a job.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Rebecca. Rebecca had many disabilities, but it never defined who she was as a person. What made Rebecca so close to me was knowing that she looked forward to me coming in and assisting her with her bed, assisting her with her meals, getting her out in the public, and getting her involved with community activities.
