Hi, my name is Khaila. I live in Desoto, TX and I have been a caregiver for two years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver to continue my experience in the healthcare field, because I attend Baylor University and a part of Baylor University as a medical student and we go out to nursing homes or assisted living homes, and we assist those who live in there. I gradually acquired a passion for assisting the elderly. So, I've been looking for ways to continue my work in that area.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, when you first get into the home, you need to pay attention to the body vibes of the client that you're going to have, because you always have to adapt to how they are. Some are really friendly and some are going to be wary when you first get there. Also, you need to pay attention very closely to what they say, because often times you can connect with them through what they tell you. You can find new ways for you all to become closer and make the job easier. And also lastly, I would advise that you give respect to the client and just pay attention to their wishes and to find out anything you can do to help them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is one that I had in Waco, Texas. I believe I connected with her through my friend Chris. She was a Baylor graduate and a part of her progress is, we would go out to many different places and do different things like movies, shopping or things of that nature. But, the reason I connected with her specifically is because she gave me so much wisdom about going to college and things that relate to medical field that I want to get involved in after I graduate from college. And, I just really appreciate the advice that she gave me in the time that we spent together. And she will be a client that I will never forget.
