Hi, my name is Kiesha. I live in Fontana, CA and I've been a caregiver for 5 years now.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I truly enjoy working with the elderly and I discovered this after my grandfather was put into a nursing home and I would go visit him and I would talk to his roommates and all of the residents there, and I really loved being able to talk with them and learn about their past, what their life was like, and just to put a smile on their faces, because a lot of them don't get a lot of time with people.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to just be patient and compassionate. Your patient or your resident may not always like you at first. You have to just take the time to get to know them, get to know what they like and dislike and just be able to anticipate their needs. I think that is a really, really good quality in a caregiver. To be able to anticipate what your resident or your client needs.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Fossett. He was a client at one of my first facilities that I worked at and he was known to be the biggest grouch in the place. Everyone was scared to go up to him or ask him questions that were needed and I wasn't. I would just go and talk to him and at first, he could be a little rude, but like I've said in my previous statements, you just have to learn to get to know their likes and dislikes.
