Hi! My name is Kimberly, and I live in Liberty Hill, TX, and I've been a caregiver for 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because, I like to take care of the elderly. My father was diagnosed with dementia six years ago, and I came home from St. Louis, Missouri, to care for him so we didn't have to put him in a nursing home. I was with him until the end. It's really a hard thing. But we did it.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be compassionate. Be not afraid of the disease that they're going through or the problems that they're having. Just treat them like you would anybody else. It's just the best way to take care of someone, just to be very compassionate and just to help them out, and do what you can do to make their life worth living, the rest of the time that they have.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget was, this little old lady, that I was working in a nursing home. And her family wanted someone with her 24 hours a day. And her stories from when she was a kid, they just amazed me. And all the life that she had lived, and all the things that she had seen. It was just amazing just to sit and listen to her talk, and learn things from her about the way it was back in the day, as she used to say.
