Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into caregiving?
Hi, my name is Kimberly Thomas. I live in Oakland, California, and I've been a caregiver for the past five years. What inspired me to become a caregiver is the fact that soon my mom will also need care. And I want to learn those skills to provide that care for her.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
Of all the people I've cared for, the first person comes to mind is my first client, Vanessa, who has cerebral palsy. But you would never know because she was so active and passionate about her art. Some of the care I provided for Vanessa was assistance eating, bathing, dressing, and transfers, also companionship. What I admire most about Vanessa was her passion for her art. And although she had a disability, she never let it stop her from pursuing her dreams.
What is your proudest moment as a caregiver?
What I think makes me a great caregiver is the fact that I genuinely care about people, and that I want to see everyone have a full, healthy, independent life. My proudest moment as a caregiver was working at Eden Villa. I truly enjoyed working with the residents because they would specifically ask for me, and that fact was rewarding in itself because I knew I was doing a good job. One piece of advice I would give to any new caregiver is to have patience, compassion, and to really love what you do, because you have a huge impact on the clients' everyday life.
