Hi, my name is Kissany. I live in Los Angeles, CA and I've been a caregiver for five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I enjoy the company of seniors, my elders. I've always cared for the elderly in my family and really enjoy the time and also felt like it was something that was benefiting me as well. The knowledge, the conversation, the history - that's what I enjoy and that's why I became a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, have patience with a smile and don't take things so personal. Our seniors are elders. They speak to us and they tell the truth, so be patient and be patient with a smile.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client that I'll never forget is Walter. He was 82 years old, retired from the Navy and he had a lot of wisdom. One day we were watching a reality show about a couple and they were going through their issue and he gave me a bit of advice. "If you want to see or know how a man will treat you, then go to his home and see how he treats his mother. If he disrespects his mother, then what makes you think he won't disrespect you? And if a man wants to know or see how a woman will treat him, go to her home and see how she treats her father. If she has no father there, then you're going to have a lot of problems." His wisdom and his advice, I still use to this day, and it is so useful. Thank you, Walter.
