Hi my name is Kolopa. I live in Stockton, CA. I've been working as a caregiver for four years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I grew up with my parents, taking care of my grandparents. I see how they take care of them and because of that, I wanted to be a CNA. Now, I'm certified CNA and I love taking care of elders. So I've one family that needs help.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is be patient. Get to know that person, the one that you're taking care of. Get to know their family. Get to know what they're like and I will put my heart to it, treating them, respecting them like your own family.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is when I used to work in ManorCare. This one patient, first time I met her, she was so mean to me and I was scared. I was nervous. So every time she get mad, I kind of listen to what she don't like and all that stuff. But then all of a sudden, I know her for almost one year. I know how she is. I know what she don't like. I know what she want and now, she really likes me and I am happy about her. I don't get scared anymore. She always treat me like her daughter now. That's like the happiest feeling ever because we know each other well now. But the first time I was scared, it's really scary. Now, when you get to know that person, it's like you met that patient a long time and all your life.
