Hi. My name is Kristen, and I live in Los Angeles, CA and I have been a caregiver for 5 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver when a friend of mine's mother had a stroke back in 2009. Nobody was there to help her, and I was there and I gained something from that. I just had the passion to take care of people, and doing it with dignity so that way, they didn't feel like they were a burden on me and just from then on I've enjoyed it ever since.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be anything that you do, do it from your heart. Make sure that you're compassionate about it and make sure that you're treating other people the way that you would want to be treated. Treat somebody as if that was your mother or your grandmother, and you'll be fine.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is Kathy. Kathyhad a stroke and could not help herself using the restroom and showering herself. She was a friend of mine. She was the strongest person that I had ever met and just seeing her like this my heart flopped. Helping her shower and clothing was something very difficult for her, but not for me. It was very empowering for me to know that I was able to help somebody that really needed my help.
