Hello, my name is Kristy. I live in Desert Hot Springs, CA and I have been a caregiver for a year.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my grandmother fell through with cancer for her second time and I started taking care of her. Shortly after she got through it all, through radiation and chemo, I decided to be a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient, get to know their character, their characteristics, what their likes and dislikes are. Be very observant with them because any little thing could set them off, So as long as you're always kind and make sure they have their own independence, you'll be fine.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget was Chloe and she had cerebral palsy. She was 18 years old and she couldn't really speak. It was yes or no was all she could answer. I will never forget her because she was a sweetheart but she needed a lot of help. She got to me because she was so young and she had full of life. You could see it just in her eyes and just by the things she wanted to do. We'd play out in the snow and stuff, So she was very memorable to me.
