Hi, my name is Kyla. I live in Upland, CA and I've been a caregiver for about 6 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my aunt had three little kids all within the span of about three years and she needed help watching them whenever she would go off to work or if she and her husband were busy. I would watch them for her up until I left home for college. Then now, every once in a while I still watch them whenever I'm home, and my stepmom is actually a caregiver through another live-in care company, but she says she really loves it and it just really inspired me to get back on it.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would just to be very patient with whoever you're caring for, and also to be very open-minded. I've learned that you learn a lot from the people that you're caring for. Just as you're helping them, they can also help you. It really makes for a good experience to be patient and open to anything that they have to offer.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I'll never forget is this little girl that I was watching. She was young, so we didn't have too, too much in common, but it was just really nice to watch her grow. I watched her for about four years until I moved, but she was so energetic and so happy about everything. And we would always do-- I would show her little baking things and cooking things, and she loved it. Anything that I was doing she was so eager to learn about, and it was really nice to bounce off of each other like that, and it was just really nice experience.
